The Centre for Surgical Invention and Innovation (CSii) is a research and manufacturing partnership at the forefront of robotics development for medical procedures. Supported by both McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, the organization receives funding from various governmental initiatives to conduct groundbreaking research, which has in turn led to the manufacturing of a proprietary medical device platform, IGAR (image-guided automated robot), that has seen success in promoting less invasive surgeries including biopsies.

With a reputation for being on the cutting edge, CSii recognized a need for a website that better reflects its achievements and research direction. The current website was dated, with a lack of user engagement due to little use of video or photography to capture the spirit of the organization. A portal was also available at the old site but saw little use. CSii leadership wished to encourage more researcher engagement in the portal through the posting of updated resources such as research papers.

A secondary website run by CSii, http://innovation-nation.ca/, is a microsite that showcases a series of free events for young researchers interested in the field of medical innovation and robotics. This site was also dated, and did not adequately showcase CSii or their events to the target audience. The organization hoped to encourage traffic through social media, tie Innovation Nation more strongly to CSii while maintaining a separate identity, and handle event announcements and registrations more effectively.

  • Reflect the partnership between CSii and Innovation Nation with similar but unique designs
  • Support a range of multimedia including but not limited to video and images
  • Effective use of social media links to promote inbound traffic from partners
  • Compliance with AODA and WCAG 2.1 Level AA accessibility standards

Solution

Our team created custom web designs for both CSii and Innovation Nation that deliver an informative and intuitive user experience. These responsive designs help reflect the partnership between CSii and Innovation Nation and make use of large, full screen banners for a contemporary and modern look and feel. Sandbox supported CSii in developing both websites to be optimized for search engines. This included several action and tactics such as identifying site wide key phrases, generating key word analysis, and providing a Writing for Search Engine Guide for content writers. Our dedicated Quality Assurance team lead several activities to ensure the integrity (security and performance) of the mobile-friendly website. This included cross device, and cross browser compatibility, as well as best practice audits.

Outcome

The new www.csii.ca and innovation microsite are both built in the intuitive OASIS CMS, which allows staff to easily apply updates to the sites. The bespoke designs allow for a streamlined user experience across a range of screen devices and platforms and highlights the partnership. The new website launched in January 2021 and includes a separate secured portal for Board members. Integration with social media channels allows users to navigate directly to CSii’s Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, as well as see live feeds and updates on the homepage.
