Richmond Hill Public Library (RHPL) comprises 4 separate branch locations (Central, Oak Ridges, Richmond Green, and Richvale). Their vision is to enrich the choices and connections available to the local community. Recognizing that public library services are broader and more diverse than ever before, the new RHPL.ca needed to become an access point to all the digital and physical assets and programs RHPL offers. In 2016, the library issued a Request for Proposal for their website redevelopment.
- Present a clean, modern look and feel coordinated with the library's logo and branding
- Provide logical content organization coupled with prominent search tools that effectively access the library catalogue and website results
- Provide the ability to integrate with APIs and third-party tools such as catalogues and YouTube channel content
- Provide a visual means to present program information, catalogue and collection information, and curated list information
Solution
Sandbox and design partners (Intent) won a joint bid to redevelop the library website. Sandbox conducted several digital strategy workshops with library stakeholders in order to develop recommendations for the new website. Sandbox provided RHPL with a functionally rich, easy-to-use and easy-to-maintain programs and events calendar that integrates with their programs database. The website was also equipped with a functionally sophisticated and expandable search. Using the Drupal content management system, website administrators can enable scheduled publishing and content review.
Outcome
The Richmond Hill Public Library website enables document and site management by the RHPL staff through the Drupal content management system. Content can easily be kept fresh and engaging by the internal library team. The new website infrastructure includes direct access to strong analytics and performance tracking data so that the library can identify and measure conversions, user navigation pathways, and opportunities for improvements in user experience and impact. Richmond Hill Public Library members can now explore the library's services and initiatives, discover and register for enriching programs and events across all devices and browsers.
Built in Drupal, the content management system equips administrative staff with a range of tools that makes managing their website and users straightforward. This includes the creation of surveys so that staff can collect public input on the site.
> Website Design & DevelopmentA comprehensive discovery process was undertaken by Sandbox to ascertain the needs and requirements for the new website. This process included an advisory board meeting, stakeholder interviews, and a web-based survey of interested parties. Best practices were also considered in the formulation of our recommendations report.
