Through its three hospitals and several community-based satellite sites, Scarborough Health Network (SHN) provides compassionate health services to the diverse community of Scarborough. In addition to managing Ontario’s largest regional nephrology program and regional community-based cardiovascular rehabilitation service, SHN is the designated cardiac centre for the Central East region of Ontario. SHN is also proud to be a community affiliated teaching site for the University of Toronto. Sandbox Software was proud to support SHN in designing and building an innovative and engaging website to better service SHN’s community and to promote the excellence in progressive care provided within the health network.

Solution
Together, SHN and Sandbox conducted an extensive discovery process to determine the needs of SHN and the people of Scarborough. This included consulting with many internal stakeholders, members of the community and physicians. With several health services locations, it was important that the new site effectively direct patients to the proper location. Intuitive and simple navigation was also important to best serve a very diverse community in exploring the large-scale website. A custom creative design was provided to reflect the compassionate care provided at SHN and reinforce the health network's brand. SHN desired an open-source content management system and the WordPress CMS was a perfect fit for the new site.
Outcome
The elegantly designed new SHN website puts navigation at the forefront. This includes supporting user flow through the site using tools such as an intuitive navigation system, comprehensive search, quick link icon trays, and a virtual concierge navigator. The website also helps patients and visitors quickly identify the appropriate SHN location for their care needs. Referring physicians are supported through an easy to use referral form directory and those looking to donate to SHN are directed to the Foundation website through strategically placed calls to action. The new SHN website will effectively support the health system and the citizens of Scarborough for years to come.
