The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by cancer through advocacy, research, and support services. Their work spans across Canada, providing vital resources to patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, and the broader cancer system. CCS is also the country’s largest funder of cancer research. Through their programs and services, CCS ensures that Canadians impacted by cancer have access to reliable information, essential services, and groundbreaking clinical trials.

About the project

Over the years, Sandbox has partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society on several patient-centric digital strategy and implementation projects in the areas of clinical trial finding and community services locating. Our work has focused on better understanding the needs of patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals, ensuring that these digital resources are accessible, effective, and impactful.

Project drivers

CCS engaged with Sandbox to support them in:

• Understanding the need for a National Cancer Trials Database, how that program would align with CCS’ mission and goals, and how it could be sustainably delivered.
• Filling a significant gap in the national cancer trials space with a patient-friendly, bilingual and national cancer trials platform built in collaboration with the Québec Clinical Research Organization in Cancer.
• Improving the reach and awareness of CCS’ Community Services Locator to ensure patients and caregivers could easily find essential support services.

What we accomplished

Through extensive research, user interviews, analytics reviews, and expert consultations, we helped CCS develop strategic and actionable insights for these programs. Our contributions included:

• Conducting a Needs Assessment for the National Cancer Trials Database to understand stakeholder requirements and technical feasibility.
• Developing a Business Model for the National Cancer Trials database to secure support and funding for its development.
• Providing Consulting Services to assist in the execution, design, build and launch of the National Cancer Trials program (Cancer Trials Canada)
• Formulating a Growth Strategy for the Community Services Locator to expand its reach and effectiveness.
